This is a regional-based position primarily supporting Penn States Eastern Commonwealth Campuses (Mont Alto, Harrisburg, York, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, Schuylkill, Scranton, Lehigh Valley, Berks, Abington, Great Valley, Brandywine) . The position will be required to travel regularly to these locations to provide on-site support, project oversight, and stakeholder engagement. Travel to the Western Commonwealth Campuses (Behrend, Shenango, Beaver, Dubois, New Kensington, Greater Allegheny, Fayette, Altoona) may also be required depending on service needs and planned projects.

The Classroom Technology Solutions Consultant will lead multi-campus AV projects, consult with internal stakeholders, and coordinate with vendors and facilities teams to ensure AV systems are consistent, scalable, and supportable. This position serves as a key liaison between Penn State IT, the Office of Physical Plant, campus leadership, and external service providers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead AV planning by tracking trends, gathering feedback, analyzing performance, and incorporating accessibility standards.
  • Ensure AV solutions align with stakeholder needs, legal standards, and university goals.
  • Consult with campus IT, faculty, and administration on classroom technology upgrades and project feasibility.
  • Serve as a classroom technology advisor for externally funded and integrator-led projects.
  • Design systems based on standard room models and develop bills of materials.
  • Oversee procurement planning and validate control system configurations.
  • Coordinate installations with OPP and campus IT, ensuring design compliance and timeline adherence.
  • Troubleshoot post-installation issues and maintain system documentation.
  • Train and support campus IT staff on classroom technology systems and best practices.
  • Provide remote support for high-profile events, including system readiness and live monitoring.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in audio/visual system integration, classroom technology support, or related fields.
  • Strong knowledge of AV control system configuration (e.g., Extron) for design review, vendor coordination, and troubleshooting.
  • Proven ability to design and implement AV solutions using standardized room models and documented bill-of-materials.
  • Skilled in using project tracking tools (e.g., ServiceNow SPM) to manage timelines and deliverables.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and support classroom technology systems in higher education or similarly complex environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaborating with IT, facilities, and academic stakeholders.
  • Experience managing classroom technology projects from design through implementation and support.

  • Extron Control Professional (ECP) certification or comparable credentials.
  • Experience coordinating with Office of Physical Plant (OPP) or similar facilities management teams for AV installs.
  • Background in training IT staff or end-users on AV system operation and support.
  • Experience with networked classroom technologies, remote monitoring tools (e.g., Extron GlobalViewer), or AV-over-IP deployments.
  • Proficiency in creating technical documentation, diagrams, and user guides.
  • Familiarity with Penn States classroom technology standards or similar institutional governance practices.

Travel is expected approximately 50% of the time to regional campuses and University Park to support classroom technology projects, attend conferences, and participate in meetings; however, travel requirements may vary based on business needs.
  • A successful candidate from a closing campus will continue supporting their existing responsibilities at that location through the transition period and campus shutdown. During this time, they may balance duties from both their existing role and the new position. Additional travel and on-site presence will be required to support a smooth transition.
