The Community Health Educator at Hui Mālama Ola Nā ʻŌiwi is responsible for the creation, implementation, and delivery of all culturally informed health education content to meet needs identified through Community Needs Assessments and programmatic outcomes assessments. To accomplish the health education mission of HMONO, this position will exercise best practices in research, topic deconstruction, and curriculum design and facilitation to ensure all educational curricula are delivered at an acceptable level of competency and cultural relevance. Utilizing health education experience within Native Hawaiian communities, the Community Health Educator will create and sustain alignment with culture and HMONO's mission and values. This position reports to the Health Enhancement Program Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Health Education:

  1. Collaborates with educators/instructors and develops HMONO's Health Education programs and activities, class curricula, content, goals, and measures to meet community needs and objectives.
  2. Ensure that Health Education content is developed and delivered with cultural sensitivity and appropriateness, particularly the Native Hawaiian population.
  3. Conducts in-depth research on health-related topics utilizing credible sources and applies various learning frameworks to increase learner engagement and understanding.
  4. Apply learning theories and pedagogical models to create instructionally sound, engaging, and effective learning solutions.
  5. Balance traditional Hawaiian healing practices and knowledge with western medicinal practices and explore ways to integrate them thoughtfully with curricula and health recommendations.
  6. Incorporate sociocultural narratives and practices, e.g., food preparation, family roles in care, or shared community traditions, into educational content.
  7. Schedules and delivers Health Education content.
  8. Trains and guides staff, students, and/or independent contractors in Health Education content delivery.
  9. Reviews content annually and as needed to ensure it is up to date with evidence-based recommendations.
  10. Work closely with the Health Enhancement Program Manager to ensure the accomplishment of programmatic outcomes and contractual agreements.

2. Program Assessment and Evaluation:

  1. Work closely with the Data Specialist to develop and implement tools to measure, monitor, assess, and evaluate Health Education programs and activities.
  2. Develops and oversees data collection processes.
  3. Assesses and evaluates health outcomes for efficacy and efficiency.
  4. Assesses and evaluates the quality of services being delivered and client satisfaction.
  5. Recommends the development of new programs and modifications to existing programs to address identified needs.

3. Community Relations:

  1. Serves as a representative of HMONO at community events, with government agencies and with other health care professionals.
  2. Maintains a professional working relationship with local, state, and national entities and individuals.
  3. Promotes awareness of and interest in HMONO's Health Education programs.

4. Strategic Planning and Reports:

  1. Participates in the development of HMONO's strategic plan.
  2. Provides analysis of Health Education data and information to support planning.
  3. Develops clear, informative reports and documents as may be required by the Health Enhancement Program Manager, Programs Director, the Executive Director, Board of Directors, or other purpose.

5. Other duties as assigned.

  8. Ability to think critically and exercise good judgement in making informed decisions.
  9. Ability to analyze data to prepare clear, coherent, and accurate activity and data reports.
  10. Ability to work effectively with frequent interruptions and changing requirements, and handle emergencies calmly and safely.
  11. Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and professions, including local, county, state, and federal entities; ability to establish and maintain favorable and professional relationships.
  12. Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time.
  13. Knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Office systems to include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  14. Knowledge and proficient use of office equipment such as PC, laptop, tablet, scanner, and associated software applications.
  15. Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education
    1. Bachelor's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related educational field or in Public Health with a concentration in Community Health/Health Promotion.
  2. Experience
    1. 2-5 years of experience in designing integrated curriculum, conducting extensive research, and facilitating courses in health-related topics.
    2. 2-5 years of experience in health education within Native Hawaiian communities, working with local cultural organizations.
  3. Other Requirements
    1. Current TB Clearance (2-Step)
    2. HIPAA Compliance Training
    3. Bloodborne Pathogens Training
    4. CPR/AED/First-Aid Training
    5. Current State of Hawai'i Driver License and personal reliable vehicle with current insurance and registration

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related educational field OR Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in Community Health/Health Promotion
  2. Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), or Certification in Public Health (CPH)
  3. Knowledge and experience utilizing Electronic Health Records systems.
  4. Experience in community engagement, outreach, and partnership building with various local organizations.
  5. Familiar with HMONO's mission, programs, and services.
  6. Possess a working knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture, traditions, history, and current events. Keep abreast with Native Hawaiian issues and current events.
