Position Purpose

Under general supervision, performs technical inspections of property to assure compliance with city codes, including but not limited to, animal control, parked vehicles, and rights-of-ways. Assists Police Officers with traffic crashes, traffic details, non-emergency calls, illegal parking, etc.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

  • Patrols assigned areas of the city looking for violations of City Code of Ordinances.
  • Performs in the control of all parking enforcement issues.
  • Addresses positive and negative issues in a professional manner on a one-on-one basis.
  • Conducts field investigations bringing about the details necessary to issue a citation or other action to achieve a satisfactory resolution.
  • Prepares and reviews visual aids and documents necessary to be presented before the appropriate regulatory agency.
  • Interacts with other agencies through communications and personal contact to gather the information necessary to complete a case.
  • Appears, testifies, and presents evidence related to city ordinance violations.
  • Attends training sessions, seminars, and college courses.
  • Prepares and presents community educational presentations, videos, and photographs.
  • Coordinates community events, including working with the state highway department. Assists officers with parades, escorts, concerts on the square and similar traffic assignments as needed.
  • Directs traffic at school crossings in the mornings and afternoons.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

Training and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalent GED certificate.
  • One (1) year of related field of experience required.

Special Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to successfully complete pre-employment background and drug screenings.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of the Police Department and governing federal, state, policies and procedures, and local statues and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of law enforcement agencies.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the responsibilities of the Parking Enforcement Officer.
  • Knowledge of the procedures in Traffic Crash Reports, Citations, and written reports.
  • Skill in interpreting and applying legal restrictions with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communications for administrative and technical purposes.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining effective interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and prepare clear and comprehensive written reports.
