Description and Terms of Employment


Monona Parks & Recreation offers full day summer camp, MPR - GO (formerly Camp Winnequah), for kids in grades 4K-4. Counselors-in-training (CITs) assist camp instructors and counselors in any or all areas of camper care and instruction. The CIT position also provides leadership growth opportunities through planning, goal setting, and generating enthusiasm for camp activities. CITs will need First Aid & CPR certification can be obtained on their own or in-house through the American Red Cross on June 6th. All CIT applicants should be interested in working with children and possess maturity, flexibility, a strong work ethic, and the ability to have fun.

This position requires the ability to work 15-25 hours a week, in an outdoor working environment and shifts are scheduled Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:30 am and 5:30 pm. Wednesday field trip shifts will be an 8-10 hour shift. Mandatory training dates are June 11-12. Camp dates are June 15-August 21; Priority will be given to staff who are available all 10 weeks of camp.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers ages 4-10.
  2. Acts as a role model to campers; in attitude, behavior, and sportsmanship. They will set a good example to campers and others with general camp procedures and practices.
  3. Regularly checks in with leadership counselor throughout the week and works towards goals given by counselors and leadership staff.
  4. Participates in the development and implementation of program activities.
  5. Leads and assists with the teaching of activities.
  6. Enthusiastically participates in any assigned areas.
  7. Maintains high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  8. Assures that campers are properly supervised at all times.
  9. Participates in all-day field trips on Wednesdays.
  10. Helps campers resolve conflicts.
  11. Helps counselors sign children in and out, and maintain ratio.
  12. Befriends campers and helps them build peer friendships.
  13. Helps with snack prep and clean up times.
  14. Maintains clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff and participants.
  15. Participates enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance to campers and counselors.
  16. Participates as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise all-camp activities and camp functions.
  17. Perform other duties as they arise, including taking photographs, liaising with parents, and helping with any organizational or cleaning work.
  18. Working outdoors, in all weather, 8-10 hours a day. Ability to walk long distances every day.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 14 years old at the start of employment and eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must have a desire to work with and inspire children in a summer camp environment.
  • Must be certified in First Aid and CPR at a minimum. These certifications may be obtained onsite on June 6th, 2026
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Ability to perform physical aspects of the position, including working long hours in an active OUTDOOR camp program, including staying in the pool for an extended time.
  • Ability to possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring First Aid and assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, emergency, illness, or injury).
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn to use a variety of equipment, including sports, crafts, and waterfront equipment; office equipment and electronics.
  • Must be able to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards.

**Must be 15 years old by May 16 for this question** Are you interested in obtaining your lifeguard certification through Monona Parks & Recreation? The full class will be held May 16, 17, 23, and 24; the recertification class will be held May 23rd. The full class includes CPR.
